leaky gut

feeling off and can’t get to the bottom of it

“I had palpitations, bad headaches, and stomach problems. Now, I’m more like my old self again.” – H.M., naturalhealthwins.com

Have you ever felt off – like your body is reacting to everything, but no test gives you a clear answer? If so, there’s a good chance the problem is in your gut. Specifically, what’s known as leaky gut

This condition, technically called intestinal permeability, happens when the lining of your small intestines  and/or large intestines weakens. Small intestines is the part of your body that absorbs nutrients.  But due to the weakness, more than nutrients gets in.  Things like  toxins, bacteria, and food particles slide through and enter your bloodstream. That, of course, sets off immune reactions, inflammation, and a long list of symptoms that feel hard to explain.

The large intestines is bringing waste out of your body, and these things shouldn’t be reabsorbing into your body.  But with leaky gut, they do.

The good news? There are proven ways to support healing.  Your goal would be to tighten and strengthen the lining.

Sounds simple, but with our foods additives and stressful lifestyles, it takes more effort than not.  But here is some information to help you figure it out.

leaky gut

gut linings should only be letting nutrients through

More about your gut

Your gut lining is built to protect you.

It’s supposed to keep harmful stuff out while allowing nutrients through. But when stress, poor diet, infections, or toxins hit the system, the gut can’t keep up.

So the barrier breaks down, and things that don’t belong in your blood end up circulating through your body.

This triggers inflammation and puts your immune system in overdrive. Over time, it may lead to food sensitivities, fatigue, skin issues, and even autoimmune problems.

Tip: When the gut barrier breaks down, the immune system becomes hyperactive. This inflammation can affect your brain, joints, and even your mood.

Could You Have a Leaky Gut?

Here are some red flags indicating leaky gut:

  • You feel bloated often
  • You react to more foods than you used to
  • You’re tired, even after sleeping
  • Your skin is acting up
  • You get headaches that seem random
  • Your joints ache
  • Your mood feels flat or anxious
  • Your immune system isn’t what it used to be

If this sounds familiar, your gut might need some serious TLC.

What Helps the Gut Heal?

Healing takes more than fixing your diet like cutting out gluten or sugar, two of the most common aggravators to the lower gut.. It’s about building up your gut’s defenses, step by step. Here few strategies that work.

Pro tip:  Do them all at once, not one at a time.  It’s typically a combination of factors that break down the lining in the first place.  So it typically takes a combination of strategies to get results.

1. Eat Foods That Do Your Gut a Favor

You can’t supplement your way out of a poor diet. Start with real, nourishing foods:

  • Cooked veggies (gentle on the gut)
  • Bone broth (rich in collagen)
  • Wild-caught fish (hello, omega-3s)
  • Fermented foods (for healthy bacteria)
  • Garlic, onions, and leeks (they feed good microbes)
  • Low-sugar fruits like berries

These foods reduce inflammation and support your gut lining.  Strategically tracking your food will give you insights, including the 5 day rule. (5 day rule simply said is that it can take five days for your body to react, and typically no one remembers what they ate five days ago. So tracking is necessary.)

2. Lower Your Stress (For Real)

Stress isn’t just in your head. It directly affects your gut by weakening the tight junctions in the intestinal wall.

Simple ways to lower stress:

  • Deep breathing
  • Prayer or meditation
  • Nature time
  • Saying “no” more often
  • Creating space for rest

Encouragement: “He satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” – Psalm 103:5

Supplements That Support Healing (And They’re Real Food)

What About Food Sensitivities?

Behind the scenes, functional practitioners often run food sensitivity tests like IgG panels.  We’ve also had success with muscle response testing (Quantum Response Testing is they specific type we use in our office.)  These tests identify hidden food triggers. When those foods are removed, inflammation tends to drop, and healing speeds up.
